Cowboy Bebep in Live Action
January 19th 2009 19:59
It was recently announced that Keanu Reeves would star as Spike Spiegal in the live action film of cult anime series, Cowboy Bebop. Cowboy Bebop is about Spike and his crew of intergalactic bounty hunters having misadventures played to sounds of funky jazz music. It's the most mainstream of all anime and is well received and should be. It's fantastic and Spike is the sexiest, most mysterious bad ass space cowboy that ever walked in 2-D. So, upon hearing the news about Reeves, I was mildly disappointed, but am crossing my fingers that he gets it right.
More importantly though, is who will play the fiery Faye Valentine. A rogue member of the Bebop crew, she's the oldest--nearly 80 years old (she was cryogenically frozen, hence the nice bod.) She is an adept fighter and flyer. And most importantly, she does NOT fall for the coy charm of Spike--although, it appears that she slips for a second every now and then, but so does he. Faye is a brilliantly 3D character and yet, I'm concerned that she'll be relegated to a buxom, in love side kick in the live action film. And even most importantly. is whoever plays her has to get her voice right. That is my favorite part about the anime series are their Japanese voices, and I'd hate to see the film makers botch this us, but I'm sure they will.

An absolute classic.
I loved the mushroom episode and the final showdown.

As Damo says...Sacrilege. Like when I heard they were doing a 'live' evangelion. How is that possible? They will of course, screw it up. 'Hollywood-ise' it.
Keanu COULD pull it off. He has the right look, and he actually has real talent when he goes for it. Its easy to forget now he's done so much flash without substance. But like you, I worry about Faye....Hollywood doesnt like truly strong women, no matter what they say. She will either be too hard or too soft, Im sure.
But we are forgetting - the easiest crew member to screw up - Ed. No one can play her - NO ONE!!

Oh, Ed! While identify (or want to identify) with Faye, I absolutely LOVE ed! And whoever is cast for her role has a tough challange ahead, but is done successfully could have a really amazing career ahead. Ed's role must go to a great character (and child) actor/actress.

On a side note: Japanese dubbed subtitles is the only way to go. Haha.
