Must See: Sunshine Cleaning
August 27th 2009 00:48
I recently was onboard a long flight, and caught up on some movies. Rather than dwell on the negative (ahem, Watchmen and Adventureland), I thought I'd write up about the bright moment of my inflight movies. Sunshine Cleaning is a spectacular, and fairly short--clocking in at about 1 hr, 30 mins--gem of a movie. Directed by Christine Jess.
Starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt as sisters who start a "decomp" cleaning business aka they clean up the blood and things after a recent death. Each sister has her reason-- Rose (Adams) needs to make money fast to pay for her bastard (this becomes a joke in the film) son's grade school tuition when he's kicked out of public school. Norah (Blunt) really gets into the business because she doesn't have anything better to do, and because her big sister tells her to. Together they make a fantastic, realistic pair, perfectly playing off one another.
The film has humorous, laugh out loud moments, and also moments that made me tear up just a bit. There's something relatable for everyone. SPOILER ALERT. Being the cast off mistress, wanting to be better than you are, wanting other people's respect, fucking up, saying hurtful things at the wrong moment, saying the right things at the right moment, learning to be yourself. Etc. END SPOILER.
Oh and extra neat thing about this movie. The directors have said that the story line is loosely based on a National Public Radio (NPR) story about best friends in Seattle who started a biohazard removal cleaning company. Ahh, NPR I love you and your original stories!!
I really think that everyone would enjoy watching a movie like Sunshine Cleaning, so if you see it in theaters near you, or showing as an inflight movie, I urge you to sit back and enjoy the show.
