Scarlett Johansson - I don't know what to think of her
January 25th 2009 16:58
I’m going to preface this post with the fact that, it doesn’t really matter what I think of her. But nonetheless, I’m so confused by her and her career, that I don’t know how to take her. Respectable actress? Media's sex kitten? And I don’t want to relegate her to one or the other, the madonna/whore complex, necessarily. It’s just that when I see her name on a film’s marquee, I don’t know if it’s a sign of quality or puffery. (Puffery? lol)
A quick run down of her works that I’ve seen:
Ghost World: Liked her, but Christina Ricci really stole the movie.
Lost in Translation: Ahh, why I loved her once.
In Good Company: Not impressed by her. or the film. Not bad, just not good.
Scoop: Her second film under Woody Allen. Woody Allen, I love you, but what have you done with her? Your female characters used to be interesting and quirky, and now you feel like a dirty old man having a midlife crisis.
The Prestige: Great film, but was ambivalent about her performance.
Films I haven’t seen:
The Girl with the Pearl Earring and The Other Boleyn Girl seemed too similar: dull, period pieces. But maybe these showed off her acting chops and not just her chops?
Nor do I have any interest in seeing a film called, He's Just Not That Into You. That can't be good for the self-esteem.
So often she is the object of desire in the film rather than a character with her own wants and desires. Maybe I preferred her, when her roles had more autonomy. Maybe it's jealousy? That's not quite right. Insecurity may be more accurate. When I go see her recent movies, she's so overly sexed that I feel bad about myself because I don't have huge breasts and pouty lips and lush hair. I think by creating her as such an object of desire in the film that it alienates the female viewers...this is really a problem with film and film making, not her.
Maybe my problem isn’t with her so much as it is with how other people—directors, photographers, media persons, etc—choose to represent her. I suppose, I’m still torn on this and would gladly like to hear any opinions, comments. I’m going to try to go see Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona this week, so maybe I’ll be swayed in a direction.

I don't like her as an actress. I don't think she's that talented AND I don't find her that sexy. She's been pretty lucky to be involved in the right movies at the right time...
