The Golden Age

So as I said I would, I'm still in my historical movie kick and just finished watching Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). Cate Blanchett is riveting as Queen Elizabeth again. She really plays the complex character well. When she's confused, we feel it, when she's angry, we tremble, and when she puts on her rally cap, we cheer for victory alongside her.
To sum up: war, religious persecution, adventure, betrayal, pregnancy, romance, sex, victory, defeat. Yup, that's about it, not in that order though. The biggest shortcoming? During Elizabeth's rallying speech before the men of England are sent off to fight, her speech, well, she's no Braveheart. It seemed as if she didn't even have control over her horse in the scene, and she was trying to talk people into fighting for their lives. That was probably the low point during many, many high points.
Oh and did I mention Clive Owen plays the handsome adventurer, Sir Walter Raleigh? Indeed he does.
If you like historical films (or rather, mock-historical films), romance or Cate Blanchett or Clive Owen, definitely check it out. Although, I do recommend watching Elizabeth first.
