Too Precious for Words

There seems to be a lot of buzz around Precious (set to release late fall in the US.) The buzz seems incredibly justified as far as I can tell from the trailer (which for some reason I can't embed--little help anyone?):
I think I am afraid to see this movie. But I know I'm going to.
Precious started out as Push: A Novel by Sapphire, which I've never read, nor have I ever heard of Sapphire. But I am definitely planning on going to the library and checking out this book. I love a good story, especially a good heart wrenching, gut churning, story.
The quick premise is: Claireece aka Precious is terribly obese and pregnant from, I think, her father, for the second time. She lives at home with her abusive mother, played by Mo'Nique. (Already looks like her performance as the mother is going to be stunning--same for Precious newcomer and title-character: Gabourey Sidibe.) Precious has dreams of making it big, but reality keeps on digging into her. What is the end consequence of all this strife? Is this a tale of redemption and hope? I don't know. I guess it'll be a surprise for all of us.
I expect a lot of it to be surprising. I'm sure several social commentaries will be made (myself include) regarding race, class, sexuality, etc about the film. And I look forward to it being both an intellectually curious piece and an emotional train wreck. Word around town is it's like a 21st century The Color Purple.
What I especially can't deny from the trailer is---the heart. Precious is funny and has the fantasies of other teenage girls ("I want to be on the cover of a magazine, but first I wanna be in one of them BET videos"). Do we give up on her? We'll see.
If you're wondering about all the different titles floating around out there, here's my take. The film was going to be released as "Push," but that's the name of some sci-fi thriller that is about to be released. So the name changed to Precious. On several occasions, for clarification, it gets the sub-title: A Novel by Sapphire. Whatever, who cares what they call it, I call it Precious, and you have to go see it.
